He did 200 hours of community service for it (assault), and will be spent in a couple of years. I'm worried though that in teaching, a conviction is never 'spent'.
It definitely had nothing to do with kids! Just a fight in the street that got out of hand…

My dream was to be a teacher and it is not happening because the job market is completely flooded. There are way too many teachers and not enough jobs for most subjects, depending on where you live (I cannot move) and what you want to teach. So, that should be a concern, unless you can move.

They WILL check his background. In my state, once a school hires you, you must be fingerprinted. This is done through a printing company, not the schools. They will check and then notify the school of the results. I am not sure how that will be handled, whether the state makes the rules or the school does. I can tell you this, for sure, if the state says he can teach, that absolutely does not mean he will find a job. It is the school's perogative to decide who they wish to hire, and with the market so bad in so many states, they won't pick someone with a criminal background. Honestly, if I lost out to someone with such a history, I would be furious, because I have no record, not even a ticket. I know he may regret what he did, but this is a field that can and will be picky. I know talented teachers with Master degrees out of work.

One thing for sure, do not rely on the colleges to know what is what. They want your $, they won't care if you cannot find a job. So, find out your state's rules and check into other states. All you have to do is call the state Department of Education and find out what the regulations are. I am pretty sure an assault is going to be an issue, so he should look into other careers. But, again check and see, that way you KNOW. If the state is ok with it, the schools will decide whether to hire him or not, so that is where your main concern would lie if he spent a lot of $.

Good luck with getting the info.

post Category: finding my dream career — admin @ 12:32 pm — post Comments (7)

I always had trouble with my parents telling them about my choices of careers. The first day I told them that I wanted to pursue a career in Theatre & Film they were completely mad at me because they said that I'm way too smart to have a career like that. (By the way, I'm not smart I'm just dedicated, I have a 4.17 GPA) So, I threw off the Theatre career off from the list. Then, I told them that I wanted to be a Spanish teacher and raise my way up to being a university professor, and guess what? They were even more mad than before! They said that it wasn't a good career. So I threw it off the list. My dad later told me about Business Administration, so I started looking at the career and then decided that I would study that. Later on I figured that I didn't decide to study Business Administration because I like it, it was because I wanted to please my dad. So I threw it off the list. Later on I decided to become a pilot, and my parents were disgusted by it because they said they didn't want me to be on a plane for the rest of my life and I figured that I really didn't wanted to do that either so I threw it off the list. My parents were looking at me like some Einstein, that I was able to become anything I wanted, so they said I should look into healthcare careers. Honestly, I don't like hospitals or any type of career that is medical, though, I still looked into it. So I told them I wanted to be a pharmacist, and they were completely happy about it.

Today, I spent almost all of the morning and all of the evening thinking about my future and my career, and I know you see it coming, I don't want to be a pharmacist. For the fact that I don't like Chemistry! and also because I'm just pleasing my parents!

So, as I said, I spent almost all this day just laying there on the bed looking at the ceiling thinking about my ideal career and I found out that I want to be a Spanish and Theatre teacher and work my way up to achieve my goal as a professor in university and as an actor in Broadway. I want to teach high school students the Spanish language and read novels with them (oh! I want to be an AP Spanish teacher I know it is hard work 'cause I've seen everything about it) I had AP Spanish with a very cool teacher and she simply doesn't teach, she goes beyond with each novel we read and applied it to everyday life experiences and problems. I want to be able to do that, I want to give students an advice, tell them how to fulfill their dreams (this applies to "Don Quixote") and more. I want to be a teacher so bad! I like school and I like the school environment, I like tutoring other students, I like teaching things to my friends, I will just love to be this type of person in the future.

There is only one problem, my parents, they don't want me to be that person. My graduation date (June 15, 2010) just keeps getting closer and I simply do not know how to step up to my parents and tell them that my career intentions are not to be a pharmacist, I want to be a teacher. I don't want to hurt their feelings or make them feel sad, I just want them to be happy about what I want to become. But I also feel I been pleasing them too much!

Please tell me in which way I can step up to them, I really need the help. (I'll give points to whoever answers this question with good intentions, just tell me how to do it and I'll do it)

alright… so u know what! ur parents r just worried about money which is smart i guess…but at hte same time, its sad that they r trying to lead ur life for u. this is ur choice in in the next year or so of college u will start to realize that!

i think that a teacher is an incredible career… and than a film/theatre minor is even better… im going to be a junior at college and i know that im upset i didnt pursue teatre like i wanter… im starting to look into it as a possible minor…plus my major is elementary education..so i get where ur coming from!

this is ur life to lead though and u need to stand up to them and decide for urself what u want to be and do for the next 50/60 years…and if u cant picture urself doing phamacy work for that long than go with something u will really love! good luck

I have a month off work coming up in about 2 weeks due to a change in jobs. I would really like to use this time to get away. I want somewhere hot and where there is stuff such as surfing to do. Do not want just a beach holiday (I get bored after about an hour of just sitting on the beach!) and want to go out of Europe. I will be going on my own (although seasoned traveller so not worried about that aspect) and have a budget of about £2500 to include spending money while I am there.

Can anyone please recommend somewhere I can go that fits this criteria? Was going to go to Bali but is now on the FCO "don't go" list…

Come to Queensland, Australia you'll love it, were a friendly bunch of people and will make you feel very welcome, keep in mind though you might not want to go home.
